Stephen King’s The Shining

The Shining is one of the books on a number of “banned books” lists. The Shining is a horror novel written by the American author Stephen King, originally first released in the year of 1977. The title of the book is based off of a song written by John Lennon entitled “Instant Karma”. The book was King’s third written novel and established him as a prominent author in the horror genre. The book was later made into a movie and even a television mini-series was later based on it.

The Shining is about a man by the name of Jack Torrance, who is an alcoholic, would-be writer who tries to rebuild his life after a series of tragedies such as him breaking the arm of his three-year old-son. He also assaulted a student at the school where he was a teacher. While he is recovering, Jack is writing a play. To prove that he is recovering, him and his wife and child move to Colorado and take care of the Overlo ok Hotel, which has a history of it s own of having psychic powers. The hotel wanted Danny, Jack’s son because of his ‘precognitive powers” . Eventually, the hotel tries to get Jack to kill the man who was summoned to investigate the hotel. The book ends with Jack trying to fix the boiler in the basement and his wife, child and detective fleeing the hotel as it explodes.

The Shining is considered n outstanding horror novel by many critics. But even though it is considered such a good work, it has still been banned by couple different states in certain areas. It was banned because it is “considered ‘dangerous violence and demonic possession and ridicules the Christian religion" (The Gumbo Pages).

Computer or Robot?

I think that if there was a perfect computer for me, it would have to be portable, but I would need it to be able to have enough hard drive space for everything that I do on it, as well as be able to function very quickly with a lot of programs open. Most computers slow down significantly when you run more than 3 or 4 different programs at the same time. I also would like to specialize the computer. Some people think that a robot would be an easy solution. I disagree. Having a robot know exactly what you want to know because it can read your mind or something creeps me out signifcantly. Thus, I would like a easy-to-use, portable, fast, and easy to specialize computer.

Brainstorming?

There are a few things that I would change about the projects that have been assigned to me in my Computer Applications class. First of all, I would like the amount of time that we have to be extened. I think that everyone that does this project would agree. We would have more time to be more creative, more expressive, and to do an overall better job. I would also change how the instructions are presented. The students are not always sure of what we are supposed to do from the given instructions. If the teacher would give a thorough description of what he/she wanted, we would be able to do a better job. Also, if we were given an example of what our project should look like, I believe that the students in my class would find it very helpful.

Life Changing Event

An event that has impacted my life was my baptism. I was baptized in late September of the year 1994. This was about a month after my birth. Because of my baptism, I am now the Christian that I am now. Also, because of baptism, I have been able to receive the sacraments of reconciliation, Holy Communion, or First Communion, and I have been Confirmed as a Catholic. I go to Church every Saturday or Sunday. I find that being a Catholic brings me closer to God and it helps me define who I am. I even go to a Catholic high school. If I had not been baptized, I would not be the person I am today.

Leprechauns

Leprechauns are just fairies in folklore myth. They usually appear as old men and are clad in a red or green coat. Leprechauns always like to partake in mischief. Leprechaun can be derived either to mean pygmy or shoemaker, depending on what word you take it from.
Leprechauns always appear to be greedy. They always have a lot of gold stashed away somewhere. They view humans as being greedy and wanting their gold. They try to bribe humans with fake coins to let them go, and they can disappear if you take your eyes off of the leprechaun. They keep all of their gold in a pot, marked by a rainbow. If you catch a leprechaun, it will lead you to its gold.

"Irish"

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated by the Irish and Irish at Heart in big cities and small towns alike with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Its a time for fun. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green! In Chicago, the people there dye the Illinois River completely green in downtown Chicago. Although I think that is pretty extreme, it shows the pride of the Irish. It is always celebrated in the United States on the seventeenth of March.

My "Bucket" List

There a lot of things that I would like to do during my lifetime. One of those things is to travel to Australia. I have always been fascinated when I hear stories from there and I think it would be fun to visit there. Also, I want to start a band sometime. I think that it would be a fun experience. Another thing that I would like to do is to drive on the Autobahn in Germany. I would also like to go sky diving. I think that would be one of the most "alive" experiences I would ever have. I would also like to go on a road trip and drive across the United States and go sight seeing on the way. I would go to every state, except for Hawaii because it is impossible to drive there from the main land. These are just some of the many things that are on my "Bucket List". What about you?

Winter Olympics-2010

I have not been watching the winter Olympics as much as I would like, but I have watched some of it. My favorite event has been the Ski cross event. I like how there were four Olympian contestants on the same course at the same time. I also liked the luge and speed skating. I think that the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver was fairly good, although there were some complications. Also,it was sad that the Georgian Luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died in a training run. I think that the people in charge of creating the courses should have prepared more and should have tested the track more.

Lent

I think that if God gave humans a progress report for Christians instead of our conscience that he has given us, the world would probably be surprised. I think that if He did do that, it might take away purgatory because the people who received a bad progress report would obviously know that they were doing something wrong, as well as the people who received a good progress report would know that they were doing everything correctly and according to God's plan and will. God might grade us on our actions towards our friends, family, and even people we don't know, as well as towards ourselves.

Personally, I am not really a big fan of Valentine's Day. Officially, Valentine's Day is a National Holiday. The holiday is named after one or more early Christian martys named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in the year AD 496.It is also the feast day of Saints Cyril and Methodious. Valentine's Day is a day where loved one's send each other gifts, such as flowers, chocolates, or cards or anything else that shows that they love and care for each other. Modern Valentine's Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid.

I have a number of favorite songs and it is always difficult to pick a favorite. Thus, I cannot simply just pick my favorite song, but one of my favorite songs is "This Is Your Life" by Switchfoot. This song always makes me think about who I am, or who I aught to be. It makes me think about what kind of person I am, and what I could do or not do that would make me a better person. Simply put, it is an amazing song because of the beat and its appeal of making me think about who I am.

Laptop Program 2011

I am looking forward to the laptop program, also known as the 1:1 program, because I get a laptop and I will have the opportunity to learn more in-depth and just more in general. I am concerned about how the teachers will be controlling what the students are looking up during class, and how much attention the laptops would take away from. One question I would like answered is, "How will the teachers control what goes on during the class period on the laptops?" I think that one way students will be able to deal with classrooms with both laptops and no laptops is to separate the classrooms, although that could pose a number of problems. I did read about a 1:1 program that used PC's, but it was recommended to use Macs because Macs are less susceptible to viruses and spyware. Also, it was reported that the students learned more and it engaged the students more. I think that it is a good idea and i am looking forward to the 1:1 program next year.

My Impression of Tech. Class

I have mostly enjoyed my technology class so far. There have been some fun parts and, well, less fun parts. I am not as used to the Mac's as i am to Windows, which i have at home, so its taken some time to get used to, and its still a work in progress. Also, sometimes the computer i am working on doesn't respond, which i'd like to think is not a common problem with Macs. The good thing about technology class is that i am working on more projects, such as blogging, i am learning how to use the Macs, and technology class is a somewhat easy course with less homework, which is definately a plus when it comes to talking classes!

Hey, my name is Nathan Shook. This is a blog for my Tec. Class at my high school, so i'm probably going to be horrible at blogging, oh well. Some things that i think people should know about me is that I really like music. I am a musician. I play trumpet, drums (which is my favorite to play), guitar, bass guitar, and the piano. I have a large family (I have 4 other siblings). I have a bunch of allergies, but i'm growing out of some of them. I take German at my high school. This basically describes me.
